I’m a huge proponent of keeping metrics for all my training activities, eating, lifting, and even sleeping (although i keep track of this one mentally). Metrics helps me see where I am doing better and where I’m doing worse. It lets me know that I’m making progress and reaching PRs.
One thing I have noticed is that not keeping metrics can be just as good as keeping metrics. I think its important that we never forget to play (and have fun). Sometimes my best progress occurs when I stop focusing on eating more, lifting heavier, or running further, and just enjoy the activity. The upside is the stress outlet that I get from just having fun.
So, turn up the music and get under the bar.
